It has been said that Water Baptism is an "outward sign of an inward work."  But it is more than a sign or symbolic act.  Water baptism is an outward confession to your friends, family and church that you have believed on and trusted in the Lord Jesus for your salvation.  It is a powerful declaration of your faith in Christ.  In water baptism you are saying, "I am identifying with Jesus' death, burial and resurrection."

· "Just as he died for my sins, I am dying to my former lifestyle apart from Him."

· "Just as He was buried, I choose to bury any desires that would be sinful and contrary to His will."

· "Just as He was resurrected from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit, I, too, am coming out of the water and choosing to walk in newness of life by the power of the Holy Spirit working within me."

Our sins once separated us from a relationship with God.  Now, by God's grace by faith in Christ's death, burial, and resurrection we have been restored to the Father.  The Bible teaches us that we should no longer be slaves (servants) to sin (Romans 6:6), that is allowing sinful thoughts and deeds to have control over us.  But rather, that Bible teaches that we should live a new life:  dead to sin, but alive unto God.

Romans 6: 12-14 says, "Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace."

Romans 6: 17, 18 says, "But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness."

¨ Water Baptism Is A Statement.

It is a public declaration that you have received Jesus Christ into your life.  You are saying that you are His disciple and follower.  See Colossians 2:12

¨ Water Baptism Is For Believers.

A believer is someone who has realized that their sin has separated them from God.  They have decided to trust Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins.  See 1 John 1:9

¨ Water Baptism Identifies The Believer With Christ's Life.

The apostle Paul explains how the immersion mode of baptism identifies the believer with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Going underwater pictures Christ's death, and coming out of the water illustrates His resurrection.  See Romans 6: 1-11

Water Baptism Is. . .

A point in time.

You will refer to this moment as the time you make a public declaration that you are a Follower of Jesus Christ.  Acts 2: 38

A time of beginning.

Jesus began His ministry when He was baptized by John in the Jordan River.  He began to teach, to heal the sick and to do other miracles.  Luke 3:23

An affirmation of identity.

At the baptism of Christ, God the Father said, "Thou art my beloved Son"...  Mark 1:11

An affirmation of God's love and God's pleasure.

"...in Thee I am well pleased."  Obedience always pleases God.  Luke 3:23

A command of Scripture.

We are being obedient to the Great Commission.  Matthew 28:19

A step of obedience in following jesus christ.

Being a follower of Christ includes being baptized in water.  This is evident throughout the New Testament.  Luke 3: 21-22

Who Should be baptized?

Every person who has believed in Christ should be baptized.  The purpose is to publicly confess your personal commitment to Jesus Christ.  Acts 2:4

What about infant baptism?  There is no indication in the Bible that infants were baptized.  However, we encourage parents to dedicate their children to God in infancy.  Our regular child dedication ceremonies allow parents to make public statements of their intent to raise their child according to God's biblical directives.  Our church family agrees to support their efforts through prayer and participation.

Please note that South Attleboro Assembly of God's water baptism is a requirement for church membership.

AS YOU TAKE THIS STEP OF OBEDIENCE,
EXPECT GOD TO DO SOMETHING GREAT IN YOUR LIFE!!
